Performance & Results of KOC samples

Tentative result of bioremediation experiments with Kuwait soil samples

Samples

Heavily Oil Contaminated Soil to Landfill in North Kuwait Area (Raudhatain) or (Greater Burgan oilfield of South Kuwait) was provided by KOC. (Three samples: # A, B, C)

Analysis of soil samples

Physical & Geological analysis: water holding capacity, soil particle size

Chemical analysis: pH, salinity, oil contents (EPA TPH gravimetric method; weight of solvent extracted material using hexane or DCM by soxhlet or sonication methods), oil components analysis (SARA analysis by TLC-FID, TPH by GC-FID, PAHs by GC/MS

Result of TPH by EPA method

Bench scale bioremediation experiment
Experimental conditions of bio-respiration method: soil 25 g, water contents 25%, inorganic nutrients (C:N:P=100:10:3) and Bioremedy (oil degrading microorganisms) in 250ml flask at 25 oC or 50 oC
CO2 evolution was measured by conductivity meter.

1: Biodegradation rate based on the CO2 evolution. It was represented by the cumulatively evolved CO2 in the experiment/total CO2 theoretically calculated from the 100% TPH in the sample was degraded,

2: Degradation rate of TPH measured by EPA gravimetric method,

3: Duration for the remediation works satisfied to the KOC criteria (less than 1% TPH in the soil).
